BRAKE MASTERS STRUT AND SHOCK SCAM
I took my son's 2011 HHR into Brake Masters at Coors and I-40 for a wheel balance problem. They said the vehicle needed Struts and shocks even though the car was practically new and had low mileage.
I went ahead and had them installed for over $800.00 (now I realize the car probably didn't need Struts). I then took the car to another place to have new tires installed. They asked what I paid for the Struts, i showed them the receipt and they informed me that I paid WAY TOO MUCH for the parts and labor. A month later, i took in my grandson's 2007 Saturn Ion into Brake Masters for an oil change.
They said it badly needed Struts and Shocks. I said, I thought I had already done that here a few months ago. They checked their computer and said no, only oil changes on their records. I knew that was not true so I declined to have them installed and just went with the oil change.
Then I went home and found the receipt for the Struts and Shocks that I had them install, Monroe parts (under lifetime parts warranty), only a year earlier for $811.42. I realized I was being SCAMMED by Brake Masters. I immediately took my receipts back to the Brake Masters shop. When I got there, I asked them to just give me the parts under warranty and I would install them myself.
They refused, saying it doesn't work that way. They have to install them and charge (overcharge) me for the install. Then I proved to them that the Struts were still in good shape and the car didn't need them so how could they say I needed to replace the Struts after only putting about 10,000 highway miles on them? Heck, the tires weren't even showing any strut-type wear.
The manager went with me outside to the car where I proved to him the car did not need Struts. The Brake Masters store #196 at I-40 and Coors Blvd. is running a Strut and Shock scam on it's customers. It used to be a reputable location to service your car but now, under it's current management, they are obviously scamming their customers and my receipts prove it.
They call it their Shocktober special in October, Shocknovember and ShockDecember, etc. They will tell you that you will get $100.00 back from a rebate from Monroe but when you read the Monroe rebate, it only for one of the cheapest items which will usually be the cost of a shock for most cars so you're lucky to get $50.00 back. AVOID THIS BRAKE MASTERS LOCATON AT I-40 AND COORS BLVD.!!! If they will scam people for struts, they likely will for other items as well.
There are plenty of reputable auto repair business in Albuquerque. Consider yourself warned.
AVOID this BRAKE MASTERS at I-40 and Coors Blvd., if not all of them!

Attempted Rip Off at Brake Masters in Scottsdale
I went into Brake Masters on 10620 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale, AZ on August 6th, 2013 with my brakes grinding. I was given a complimentary ride to work. After the salesman, Shea, had my 2003 Pontiac Aztek looked at he called with the news of what repairs were needed. I expected to hear that I needed new brakes & rotors. But then Shea proceeded to explain that left front hub bearing had allot of play & needed replacing, as well as the bushings in the control arms were supposedly almost completely separated. This is what I needed to make my car safe. My approx. $300 brake job was now $1400.00!
Thank goodness my boyfriend suggested a second opinion. I had my car towed to another repair shop. They agreed that I needed new brakes & rotors, BUT they said the left front hub bearing had very little play, and was normal. Also, the arm bushings were worn, but have allot of life & had normal wear.
I am aghast that there are repair shops that prey on female customers that are unfamiliar with car mechanics. I have been to other locations of Brake Masters before with this vehicle, but have never been treated this way. These “add-ons” were to the tune of over $1000.00 in additional cost to me, and they were not required to be done at this time.
I will NEVER return to Brake Masters for repairs again, and will dissuade others from going there, especially that location.
My final bill for the brake & rotor replacement with new brake fluid was only $345.01 (considering that the Brake Masters was going to charge me $309.80 for the same brakes, rotor & fluid replacement...that includes the FREE lifetime brake warranty of which $71.95 was subtracted from the total)
